Stuff I use

Since I just started this blog I don't have all the prices for everything off the top of my head. When I do my weekly shopping this weekend I will definitely save my receipts to post on here. But I will say this for now. I get all my cleaning products from Target. Target sell Seventh Generation and Method which are both naturally-derived, biodegradable, and nontoxic. I dont buy the Method brand of shampoos, soaps, conditioners, etc... because they are too expensive. I do buy our bathing products from Trader Joes. Trader Joes also sells all purpose cleaner and dishoap for super cheap. I will get all the prices so I can post them.

My first blog and my mission for this site

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to look at my blog. I hope this site ends up being a resource for many moms (or of course dads), or anyone looking to live a green lifestyle. My goal and mission for this site is to educate my friends, family, neighbors, and peers that going green is achievable for the same price as being nongreen. I have three children. Our family lives off of one income and I am a stay at home mom. I want what’s best for my family, as do you. It shouldn’t cost three times as much to be able to live healthfully and sustainable. The purpose of this site is for everyone to share green deals and bargains they spot while out. My family is almost 100% green. My three year old daughter Abby is never sick......ever. I feel it has a lot to do with her diet and the way we maintain our home. My twin boys are the same. They have not been sick once. I breastfeed them so it is important for me to eat healthier than anyone else in my family. See DDT is a synthetic pesticide that was used widely in the late 40's and early 50's. They literally sprayed this crap everywhere and used it to treat diseases like malaria and typhus. 80 million pounds of this stuff was applied to gardens, fields, forests, and farmlands back then, and 1 billion of it has been used total since then to now. It was banned in the 70's but it still contaminates our land. It is in our food, water, Vegetables, meat, fish, and dairy products. Animal and fatty foods contain the highest levels because the chemical is stored in fat and increases in concentration as it moves up the food chain. Breastfed babies have the greatest ongoing exposures to DDT from food. Anyhow I am always trying to get organic, natural, nongenetically modified, green, biodegradable, and nontoxic products for my family but at reasonable prices. We don’t have much money so I shop around and I am always trying to figure out where to go next. Lots of stores have stuff for really cheap while others have the same product for ten times more. The purpose of this site is for us parents to compare and contrast all our knowledge so we can all live a healthy, green, sustainable lifestyle. The site will have categories divided by the kitchen, the bathroom, the nursery, the garden, the closet, the whole house, etc...Then if we all post where and how much we saw something for we can all start working towards a better future!

Why I want to be green

My name is Amy and I am a stay at home mom with three beautiful healthy children. I have been with my high school sweetheart for nine years. We have a three year old daughter named Abby and 4 month old twin boys Gavin and Parker. We have a 2 year old pug named Bentley. Twins don’t run in either side of our families and I have a theory as to why I got pregnant with twins. Before going green we would drink milk, and lots of it. I never cared what brand or origin as long as it was fat free. I drink it with dinner, anything acidic, breakfast, baked goods (which I do a lot of....I love to bake). All the time. We would go through about a gallon a day. Well while taking an Environmental Biology class I had to do a report on antibiotic resistance. While researching the effects on cows and antibiotic research I stumbled upon an article about a rise in fraternal twin boy births amongst mothers who have a lot of exposure to Rbgh. For those of you who don’t know it stands for Recombinant bovine growth hormone. Basically they give this hormone to cows as if its crack. It increases milk production up to 25 %. Studies suggest that an insulin-like growth factor, a protein released by the liver in response to growth hormone, may be the reason. Studies have shown that the protein increases ovulation and that it persists in the body after entering via digested food, particularly milk. I read this while pregnant and that was enough reason to be conscious of what chemicals and hormones are running through our bodies. Now it is my passion and livelihood to live green, nontoxic, hormone free, pesticide free, biodegradable, etc...I hope you can do the same for your family. :-)
